Children's Outreach and Home Support in Northamptonshire

Giant Healthcare Corby provides children's outreach support across Northamptonshire, at home and out in the community. A support worker comes to you, spends time with your child, and gives you back a few hours that are yours. It can be one afternoon a week or support every day, and it changes as your child changes.

What outreach actually means

Outreach is simply support that comes to your child rather than your child going somewhere.

That might be a support worker arriving after school so your child has one to one time and you can cook dinner. It might be Saturday mornings at the park or the swimming pool. It might be four hours in the school holidays when the usual routine has fallen apart. It is practical help, delivered by someone your child knows.

What a session looks like

Sessions are planned around your child, not around a timetable. If something is not working, we change it.

In the home
Playing, reading, cooking together, getting ready for bed, help with routines and transitions, and time spent doing whatever your child actually enjoys.
Out in the community
The park, the library, swimming, a cafe, the shops. Building confidence in places that are difficult at first and ordinary later.
After school and holidays
Cover at the times families struggle most, when school stops and the routine goes with it.

Personal care for children

Where a child needs personal care, our support workers are trained and CQC registered to provide it.

That includes help with washing and bathing, dressing, toileting and continence support, oral care, skin care and applying prescribed creams, help with eating and drinking, and support with mobility and transfers.

Support workers prompt and assist with medication. They do not administer it, and they do not carry out clinical or nursing tasks. Where your child needs those, we work alongside the health professionals responsible for them.

Routines, communication and behaviour

We work with the communication your child already uses, whether that is speech, Makaton, symbols, a communication app or something only your family understands.

We follow the routines that already work rather than importing new ones. Visual timetables, the order things happen in, the specific cup, the specific chair. If it matters to your child, it goes in the plan.

Where behaviour is difficult, we look for what is driving it. Most of the time the answer is a change nobody explained, a sensory environment nobody adjusted, or a need nobody heard.

Short breaks for families

A short break is time for you. Time to sleep, to see friends, to be with your other children, or to do nothing at all.

Parents often feel they should not ask. You should. Families who get regular breaks cope better for longer, and the child benefits from a parent who is not exhausted.

Short breaks can be a few hours a week, a regular evening, weekend sessions or holiday cover.

Who outreach support is for

Children and young people with learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, sensory impairments, mental health needs and complex needs.

We support children living at home with their family, and children in foster placements where extra support helps the placement hold.

If you are not sure whether your child would qualify, ask. It costs you a phone call and we will tell you honestly.

How support is paid for

Through your local authority
Following a social care assessment, support may be commissioned directly.
Direct payments or a personal budget
You hold the funding and choose the provider. We can be that provider.
Privately
Some families arrange and pay for support themselves, with no assessment needed.
Not sure?
Most parents are not, and that is normal. Ring us and we will explain the options and point you toward who to ask.

Our support workers

Small, consistent teams. Your child sees the same faces rather than whoever is free that week, because consistency is what makes this work.

Every support worker is recruited under safer recruitment procedures, holds an enhanced DBS check, and completes safeguarding, first aid and behaviour support training before working unsupervised. Support workers are matched to your child on interests and personality as well as skills, and if the match is wrong we change it.
