Supported Accommodation for Adults Aged 18 and Over

Giant Healthcare Corby provides supported accommodation and supported living across Northamptonshire for young adults aged 18 and over. You get your own place and your own front door, with support built around the things you actually need help with, and none around the things you do not.

What supported accommodation is

You live in your own flat or in your own room in a shared house. You hold the tenancy. Support workers come in for agreed hours to help with the parts of independent living that are hard, and the rest of the time the place is yours.

It is not a care home and it is not a hostel. Nobody is on duty in the hallway watching you, and nobody decides what time you go to bed.

Supported accommodation, supported living or residential care?

People use these terms as if they mean the same thing. They do not, and choosing the wrong one wastes months.

If you can manage most of a day alone and need help with specific things, supported living is usually right. If you need someone present continuously, it usually is not.

Supported accommodation and supported living
You hold your own tenancy. Support is separate from the housing, so if the support changes, your home does not.
Residential care
Accommodation and care come as one package from one provider. Support is on site around the clock.

What support looks like

Money
Budgeting, bills, benefits, rent, and the paperwork that arrives and gets ignored.
Food
Planning meals, shopping, cooking, and keeping a kitchen you can actually use.
Health
Booking appointments, getting to them, understanding what was said afterwards, and prompting with medication.
The home
Cleaning, laundry, reporting repairs, and keeping the tenancy so nobody threatens to end it.
Work and study
Applications, college, training, interviews, and staying in something once it starts.
People
Friendships, family contact, staying safe online and in the community, and knowing who to call when something goes wrong.

Support that reduces

The aim is that you need us less.

We start with more hours and step them down as skills build. Support is reviewed with you, and if something is going well, we stop doing it for you.

Some people move on to fully independent living. Others keep a few hours a week for years. Both are successes.

Who it is for

Young adults aged 18 and over with learning disabilities, autism, mental health needs, physical disabilities or sensory impairments, and care leavers moving toward living independently.

We also support people moving out of residential care, out of a family home, or out of a placement that has broken down.

We do not provide nursing or clinical care. Where someone needs those, we work alongside the health professionals responsible for them.

How a placement is arranged

  1. 01

    Referral

A social worker, transitions worker or the person themselves gets in touch.

  2. 02

    Assessment

We meet the person, not just the paperwork. We look at what they can do, what they want, and what support would genuinely help.

  3. 03

    Matching

Where accommodation is shared, we consider who already lives there before we agree anything.

  4. 04

    Moving in

Visits first where time allows, then a planned move at the person pace.

  5. 05

    Review

Support is reviewed regularly and adjusted with the person, not around them.

Your rights

You hold the tenancy. You choose who comes in and when, within the agreed support hours. You can complain, and you can ask for a different support worker without having to justify it at length.

Your support plan is written with you and you keep a copy. If you disagree with something in it, that disagreement gets recorded too.

Read our safeguarding approach

Our support workers

Small, consistent teams. Every support worker is recruited under safer recruitment procedures, holds an enhanced DBS check and completes safeguarding, first aid and behaviour support training before working unsupervised.

We match on personality as well as skills, because someone you cannot talk to is not support.

Areas we cover

Corby, Kettering, Wellingborough, Northampton, Rushden, Desborough, Rothwell and Oundle. We consider referrals from neighbouring authorities where the placement is right for the person.

Where our accommodation is

Ordinary flats and houses in ordinary streets across Northamptonshire, close to buses, shops and the places a young adult actually goes.

We do not publish addresses, and we do not photograph the properties. The people who live there have neighbours, and a young person's home should not be identifiable from a marketing page. Referrers see the property that would actually be offered, during matching.

That depends on the accommodation. Some people have a self contained flat, others their own room in a shared house.

It depends on the assessment and on funding. Hours are reviewed and usually reduce over time.

Yes, from the age of 18.

Yes. Support goes up as well as down, and asking for more is not a failure.
